Harrisburg Spanish AcademyPennsylvania’s capital city and the county seat of Dauphin County, Harrisburg is bordered by the Susquehanna River and features excellent cultural and educational venues, including the State Library of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Arena, and the National Civil War Museum. There are loads of organizations and businesses geared towards Spanish speakers in Harrisburg, but one of the most unique and notable is Estamos Unidos de Pennsylvania. Founded in 2002 to help Hispanic children in the areas of cultural heritage, educational advancement, and mentoring, the group has expanded to assisting hundreds of adults and children in the Harrisburg area. Along with leadership conferences and workshops, Estamos Unidos sponsors a summer camp called Hablando Español, which strengthens Spanish language skills and promotes cultural awareness. It also continues yearly participation in what was one of its first endeavors – La Fiesta del Niño, or Toys for Tots. Each year around Christmastime, a party is held for underprivileged children and families in the Harrisburg area with food, toys, and entertainment. Estamos Unidos is truly a cornerstone of Hispanic culture in the city of Harrisburg. If you would like your child to develop an appreciation for the Latino culture and learn to speak another language, consider enrolling him or her in the Harrisburg Spanish Academy. How do you think becoming bilingual will change your child’s life? What activities do you look forward to participating in? We’re always happy to hear your thoughts and opinions.
